SaLIS cover  Surveying and Land Information Science
AAGS co-publishes Surveying and Land Information Science (SaLIS), an academic journal devoted to reporting research conducted to advance geodetic surveying, land surveying, and geographic information systems. The journal has been in existence for almost a quarter of a century, and in that time, a number of its editors were geodesists belonging to AAGS.
Typical issues published in SaLIS include research articles, technical papers, surveying notes, surveying education, surveying history, book reviews, and current literature reviews. Every four years, the journal publishes the U.S. Report to the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). The proceedings of the Surveying Teachers Conference are published bi-annually. SaLIS is published online at Ingenta Connect.

Submit papers to the technical editor of SaLIS, Professor Steve Frank, Surveying Engineering Department, New Mexico State University, e-mail: sfrank@nmsu.edu. SaLIS is edited and published by Ilse Genovese, SaLIS Managing Editor; e-mail: ilse.genovese@acsm.net.

Bulletin 231   The ACSM Bulletin
The ACSM Bulletin is a bi-monthly magazine which covers topics ranging from land surveying to height modernization, from cartography to GIS and LIS, from the national cadastre to flood mapping and the standardization of geographic data, and from LIDAR, CORS and satellites to exploring the universe. It carries popular science articles, features, reports, industry news, and information on affiliated professional organizations, federal agencies, and the private sector. One issue is typically devoted to education in surveying, geography, and GIS. In addition, the magazine carries special-interest columns targeted toward the young surveyor, geodesist, cartographer, and GIS professional. The Bulletin will shortly be published online as "webmazine."
Submit articles to Ilse Genovese, the editor of the ACSM Bulletin [e-mail: ilse.genovese@acsm.net]. Contributed articles are included in the reviews of recent literature published in SaLIS and in the free, Internet-based contents service for journals in geodesy, the Tables of Contents in Geodesy.

What does height really mean?
This is a four-part series examing the fundamental question, "What does the word 'height' really mean?" The creation of this series was motivated by the national Geodetic Survey's embarking on a height modernication program, as a result of which NGS will publish measured ellipsoid heights and computer Helmert orthometric heights computed from GPS ellipsoidal heights and geoid heights determined from geoid models as their published vertical control coordinate, rather than adjusted orthometric heights determined by spirit leveling. The goal of the papers in this series is to explain the meanings of these terms in hopes of eliminating confusion and preventing mistakes that may arise over this change.
- Part I: Introduction
- Part II: Physics and gravity
- Part III: Height systems
- Part IV: GPS heighting

Control Surveying
- The future role of geodetic datums
- The new RTK

These two papers were published in SaLIS vol. 66, no. 2, the ACSM - U.S. National Report to FIG. The journal and this particular issue, are available online at Ingenta.
